Semrush Review 2026: Is It Worth the Investment for Small Businesses?

Semrush

4/5

Starting from

$139/mo

Pros

  • Keyword, competitor, site audit, backlink, and position tools in one workspace
  • Five projects and 500 tracked keywords on the entry SEO plan
  • Current plans include AI-search visibility features
  • Historical and content optimization features are available on Pro+
  • Annual billing lowers the effective monthly price

Cons

  • The entry SEO plan costs $139 month to month
  • Interface can be overwhelming for beginners
  • Many advanced features require higher-tier plans
  • Additional users start at $45 per month

Verdict

Semrush combines broad SEO research and monitoring with newer AI-search visibility tools. It is easier to justify for a business that will use several parts of the suite every month; a business that only needs occasional keyword research may be paying for more than it needs.

How we evaluated Semrush: For this August 11, 2026 update, we reviewed Semrush’s current pricing, plan limits, and published product workflows for keyword research, site audits, backlink analysis, position tracking, and AI-search visibility. We did not run a new paid-account test for this update, so we do not present database size, measurement accuracy, or business results as independently measured facts. Semrush combines keyword research, competitor research, site auditing, position tracking, backlink tools, and AI-search visibility in one product family.

For a small business, the practical question is whether enough of those tools will be used to justify a subscription that starts at $139 on monthly billing.

What Is Semrush?

Semrush is an SEO and search-visibility toolkit. Its current plan page groups traditional SEO work—research, auditing, backlinks, and rank tracking—with features for tracking brand visibility in AI-generated answers.

Key Features for Small Businesses

Keyword Research

The Keyword Magic Tool starts with a seed keyword and returns related terms with Semrush’s search-volume estimates, difficulty scores, intent labels, and SERP features. Those figures are modeled tool data, not first-party Google measurements, so use them for comparison and prioritization rather than as exact forecasts.

Competitive Analysis

Enter a competitor’s domain and Semrush returns estimated organic keywords and traffic, backlink data, and advertising research. These reports can help identify topics and competitors to investigate, but an estimated traffic figure should not be treated as the competitor’s actual analytics.

Site Audit

The built-in site auditor crawls a configured project and flags issues such as broken links, page-performance concerns, missing metadata, and crawlability problems. The tool prioritizes findings, but a site owner should still confirm the cause before changing production pages.

Position Tracking

Position Tracking monitors selected keywords over time, including configured locations and competitors. The entry SEO plan currently lists 500 tracked keywords across five websites on the official pricing page.

AI-Search Visibility

The current plans also track visibility, mentions, sentiment, and cited sources across supported AI-search experiences. Higher tiers add more prompts, sites, historical data, and reporting. This is useful for monitoring, but the reports do not guarantee that a brand will be cited or that an AI answer will remain stable.

Pricing Reality Check

Semrush’s US pricing page displayed these prices on August 11, 2026. Annual figures are effective monthly prices for a prepaid annual term.

PlanMonthly BillingAnnual Effective PriceSelected Published Limits
SEO$139/mo$117.33/mo5 websites and 500 tracked keywords
Starter$199/mo$165.17/moSEO tools plus expanded AI-search reporting
Pro+$299/mo$248.17/mo15 websites, 1,500 tracked keywords, historical data, and content optimization
Advanced$549/mo$455.67/mo40 websites, 5,000 tracked keywords, API access, and higher AI prompt limits

Additional users start at $45 per month. Semrush can change plan names, limits, and promotional terms, so confirm the live page and billing cadence before buying.

The subscription is easier to justify when keyword research, audits, competitor work, and tracking are all active parts of the marketing process. If the business only needs occasional research, a narrower or free tool may cover the immediate job.

Semrush vs. Alternatives

We removed the previous competitor table because it mixed stale prices with subjective labels such as “best in class.” For a useful comparison, price the current plan that covers the required number of sites, tracked keywords, users, reports, and API needs. Then compare data coverage and workflow on a representative set of your own keywords and competitors.

Who Should Use Semrush?

  • Businesses investing in SEO as a primary growth channel
  • Agencies managing SEO for multiple clients
  • Content marketers who need keyword data to guide editorial calendars
  • Business owners in competitive niches who need to understand what competitors are doing

Who Should Skip It?

  • Very early-stage businesses that are not ready to invest in SEO yet
  • Business owners who want a simple, set-and-forget solution
  • Teams that will not have time to act on recurring audit and tracking data

The Verdict

Semrush covers more of the search workflow than a single-purpose keyword or audit tool. That breadth is valuable when a team will use it consistently, but it does not guarantee traffic, rankings, or a financial return. A business that is still establishing a basic SEO process can start with a smaller toolset and revisit Semrush when recurring research, auditing, and measurement justify the cost.
